US HISTORY CLASS:
1. Ecology and History: This is an interdisciplinary lesson that connects the interrelationship between Ecology and History focusing on the effect ecological changes has on history. The module was provided by Cornell University's Advancing Secondary Science Education thru Tetrahymena program (ASSET). The module uses excerpts from the book "Changes in the Land" by William Cronon, the father of environmental history and "Water", by Alice Outwater. It summarizes how the coming of the European settlers changed the ecology of the New England and Canada, including the Beaver's Fur Trade and how it resulted to the destruction of Dams which in turn impacted the ecological balance in the region. This was an opportunity for Environmental Science and American History teacher to make the lesson more interdisciplinary. Students' understanding were assessed by asking student to complete one of the following assignments:
1. Compose an essay explaining how the disappearance of the beaver because of
the fur trade increased European settlement in America.
2. Give a speech as a member of the Abenaki tribe convincing your tribe not to take part in the fur trade.
3. Write a journal as young settlers in New England describing the
change in land and animals that you see in your settlement.
