TOP FIVE:
1. PAPER RECYCLING AND PAPER-MAKING PROJECT: Students at Augusta Fells Savage Institute of Visual Arts recycle paper. Students and teachers segregate their waste paper from other trash by putting them into the recycling box. Members of the green team designed and distributed the recycling boxes in the beginning of the school year. Every Wednesday afternoon, the "Green Club" members empty these boxes and transport the collected paper to the dumpster for the city to pick up the following day. Some of these collected paper are recycled in the school, the green team use their artistic abilities in transforming these waste into greeting cards, some cards are also used in cutting letters which then used in labeling the bulletin and information boards.
2. STORM DRAIN STENCILING: After learning about how storm drain works and how it impacts the Bay if used inappropriately, students engaged themselves in painting storm drains around the school building to remind people that storm drains are for rain water only and not for trash. This project was made possible through partnership with "Blue Water Baltimore" who provided training to the teacher and stenciling kit to the students.
3. ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND AWARENESS (in school and outdoor/during school hours and after-school activities): Augusta Fells Savage Institute of Visual Arts promotes environmental awareness among students of different grade levels. Environmental education programs in the school occur during class hours through integration of environmental education in different content areas. Some of the activities include a school-wide assembly, a symposium, inviting guest speakers for teachers and students, workshops and training, field trips, and after school activities. Augusta Fells has offered Environmental Class in the past three years. Other than the Environmental curricula and opportunities for students the school is offering, Augusta Fells has a dedicated group of students who serve as environmental leaders who lead the different environmental projects and programs in the school and in the neighboring community. The strong partnerships with the community the school has established provided students with meaningful and important learning experiences making them environmentally literate citizens.
